Object number 45 in Messier's catalog is the Pleiades, also know as the Seven Sisters for the seven stars that can be easily seen with excellent eyesight. In Japan, the name for the Pleiades is Subaru, the same as the car manufacturer, and if you look on a Subaru car, you will find the Pleiades star cluster as its emblem or logo. The Pleiades is a relatively nearby open cluster, which according to new data from the Hipparcos satellite is located at a distance of 370 light years. M31 - The Great Galaxy in Andromeda The Andromeda Galaxy is a gigantic collection of more than 300 billion stars. Easily visible from a dark site, it is probably the farthest object that can be seen with the unaided eye, at a distance of about 2.5 million light years. Companion dwarf elliptical galaxies M32 and M110 are also visible. M31 is a member of our local group of galaxies, which also contains the Milky Way, Magellanic Clouds, and M33. All are part of the gigantic Virgo supercluster of galaxies that dominates our local part of the universe.
