ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I am infatuated with words, sometimes even dependant on them, because I need to tell tales. I do as much as I can to make images and balance within my work. My latest paintings still have an impression of literature, like in my series. However, this time, I was not influenced directly by any particular books.
The inspiration for my latest series of paintings came from a stack of old photos, which were taken around twenty years ago. At that time, economic reform in China was just beginning, and the country was first starting to open up to the world. A young couple went to have a picnic on an island with their children. They took photos, stretched and sat around a bonfire. They talked a lot about art. And even a tiny bit of information got them so excited. I was about five at that time. And I thought that art was so great; all my knowledge was so ambiguous and pure. I've spent nearly two years painting this series in order to celebrate the idealism that filled me at that time. The imagination that Chinese Youth had back then was tender and simple.
