I'm currently reading "Making Things Talk by Tom Igoe and I really like these little Arduino computers :) Just a microcontroller, analogue and digital I/O pins and a USB socket.

Open source digital/analog hardware tomfoolery. Come ON! this is like... a stocking stuffer! Buy dozens of these... either that, or go find some annoy-o-trons. One or the other... but you should totally play with these things. Great stuff!
