It is more important than ever to demonstrate means of cultivating food that do not have a negative effect on our planet and its inhabitants and is also safe, healthful and free of contamination. Hydroponics, organic culture, aquaculture, and the combination of these technologies, aquaponics, all can be used to produce large quantities of food in very small spaces in an environmentally friendly way. Whether applied in small backyard gardens or commercial operations, these technologies are the way of the future.

I am now obsessed with Aquaponics and have been developing my own, easy to use system. Thank you so much for the info. I think this is going to be huge in my Urban Sustainable living Garden.

Ever since I saw my first demonstration of this at the University of Minnesota greenhouses in 1995, I've been totally enamoured with this process. In that system, they used native grasses and swamp plants instead of lettuce, but the concept is the same. We are now approaching the time I knew we would where the US begins transitioning into intensive cropping systems that use multiple crops and real human ingenuity. It's time for smart people to start farming again -- and they are!
