- "The Deed Is Done" The deed is done; the dénouement beside the point; Of course, some several trinkets to collect And box and some there are who promise to reflect On what's been said or what will come for future masters to anoint. But, I am finished here, and all too often turn my eyes To months and years ahead, the promise now fulfilled, For something gentle in the wind to sacrifice, some new grain for the mill, And I'll be at the thing with something less disguised Than I was wont to wear upon my face, A freedom that was never there, a place To some young soul's reported win, perhaps a show; the race Is not my bailiwick and competition's traced The route for them not me! I'll be satisfied If in the end, I walk across the line with remnants of my pride.
