All those speeches you could never be bothered to read in school, conveniently assembled in one place, so as to facilitate easier, and more complete, avoidance.

Aw man! No George W Bush speeches. Shucks! "Fool me once shame on you...um...fool me...um...twice...shame...well your not gonna fool me twice!"

Another old page ... putting back up to remind myself to explore it more . -j Oh, much to be said about this page ... but first let me voice a little skepticism: who says that these are the top 100 speeches? Well ... "according to 137 leading scholars of American public address, as compiled by Stephen E. Lucas (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Martin J. Medhurst (Baylor University)" OK, who determined that the 137 scholars were qualified to judge these speeches? Ah, you're too cynical, you say. Maybe. But does being a scholar or professor confer credibility? Maybe. But, maybe not. I suppose that my training as a scientist gets in the way: I want to prove things myself, to seek the scholars that I trust, to question everything. And the Buddhist part of me wants to seek the middle ground, despite my own liberal leanings. Having thus thrown sand into you eyes, let me say that this is a really impressive site. Not only can you read the speeches, but you can actually listen to most of them. The site design is simple, yet compelling. I am old enough to remember many of these speeches. The speeches by John Kennedy and Martin Luther King are indelibly etched into my mind, as well as many of the others speeches from 1955 to the present (I was born in 1950). If I were one of the 137 scholars, I would certainly have cast my vote for many of these, even without being presented with a set of criteria to judge them by. I do wonder what the distinguishing criteria were, but I will set that aside as there is too much profundity here to worry much about such mundane matters. more later ... gotta think this one over ...gotta rest my 56 year old bones; its late my friends.
