For a very, very male opinion of womanhood these images are unsurpassed. Certainly, all these women are beautiful - but those suffering "I-have-to-go-to-work-but-I'm-being-brave-about-it" little faces!!! Come on!

For a very, very male opinion of womanhood these images are unsurpassed. Certainly, all these women are beautiful - but those suffering "I-have-to-go-to-work-but-I'm-being-brave-about-it" little faces!!! Come on!
But then the work dates back to the 20s - still early days for women's emancipation - and these are after all how quite a few men visualized their "perfect" woman, a fairly far cry from how women actually were. I'll add one little point: had a woman produced these art works her models would have had a grin wide enough to have to be knotted at the back of the head.
Visit the site for more of these gems - they're really beautifully done, and clic on the American Archives logo (top left) for a large number of other US illustrators - all worth seeing, especially those by Elizabeth Shippen Green.
