We have learned to define ourselves by what we buy. Like peacocks displaying plumage, we display our gadgets and toys to prove our worthiness. It's a sick and scary way to live. It also has serious consequences for the planet, contributing to all kinds of ills from global warming to vicious near-slavery for many workers who actually make this stuff. The Old Testament prophets used to decry this sort of thing and promised plagues and disasters would befall all who were seduced by ancient forms of conspicuous consumption. I don't believe in their god, but these old Hebrew sages were on to something.

The pattern of out-of-control consumption in the U.S. is not too different from the well-known behavioral patterns of substance abusers.
