I have an Alphasmart 3000 and it's the coolest thing - wish I could afford a Dana.

My Alphasmart Neo is great. Free of the distractions a full computer has, I can really focus on my writing and as such my output has increased significantly. Its so light that I can take it anywhere, and with a sturdy frame (its built with school children in mind) and a low price tag, I don't have to worry about breaking or losing it.

If the Alphasmart Neo cost half of its current $219 price, I'd buy one. Given the low cost and small size of contemporary entry level laptops, the Neo isn't an attractive enough option. One could buy a cheap knock-around laptop for around $400, and install Ubuntu Linux on it. Et voilà, you'd have a perfect full featured on-the-go writing platform with tons of open source software already installed alright --plus wifi capability, a web browser, email etc...
