this is a really sweet story of a family accepting their transgender child at a very young age. Jazz also showed Walters a drawing of a little girl with a tear-streaked face. Jazz drew it when she was in pre-school and still dressing as a boy. Asked by Walters why the little girl was crying,... more

Yay, they're using someone who doesn't fit in binary gender roles to reinforce them! C'mon, there's nothing innate in dresses and dolls. I don't care if she wants to live as a boy or a girl or whatever, but gender roles are not encoded in the brain nor they have any connection to sex other than what society makes. And really, there should be more options than being a normal boy and being a normal girl. OMG, he likes dolls, he's trans, gonna have surgery and make him a girl so he can fit normal gender stereotypes!!!

From the page: "We'll say things like, 'You're special. God made you special.' Because there aren't very many little girls out there that have a penis," said Renee. "

Besides the obvious body parts issue, gender is much more about our/society's perceptions. What it means to be a girl? a boy? I'm glad there are courageous families out there willing to share their stories.

"At only 15 months, he would unsnap his onesies to make it look like a dress. When his parents praised Jazz as a "good boy," he would correct them, saying he was a good girl." - can a 1 and a half year old child actually know the difference?

Very insightful. I'm still trying to rap my mind around transgender, but this certainly helps shed some light on the subject.

Not a bad article, considering. I could do without the conflation of female-coded trappings with transexuality though. This kid's trans, but the fact that she identifies as female is what indicates that, not the fact that she likes to play with dolls.

An interesting take on the not so traditional roles for men and women.

Interesting article. It sounds like the parents are letting the child in the driver's seat.

gotta give kids credit, they know a lot more than we realize. The really sad part is kids out there going through this with parents in denial trying to force, shame and beat it out of them.
