Seeing a photo of Taymouth Castle Golf Course recently reminded me of my first job. I have no real idea of what it is like to be an apprentice these days but twenty years ago I had the opportunity to mix with men of a different generation and of a different world. One summer afternoon in particular, I was party to what seemed at the time a casual conversation about wartime experiences but what in retrospect must have hidden some very raw emotions for these guys. The Head Greenkeeper and the grubby ex-farm labourer sitting opposite me had both taken part in the D-Day landings and travelled from Normandy all the way to Germany. Young men as they were, their experiences in Paris were as shocking, sinful and thrilling to them as their encounters with the German Army. It was easy to understand how their few days of recklessness would have been enjoyed and how hard they must have tried to blank out the weeks they had before them. The conversation ended when the Head Greenkeeper told how his crossing of the Rhine came to an abrupt halt when a phosphorous grenade was lobbed into his aluminium boat, killing some, maiming some and forcing him to swim to the shore.
