Within a Deep Forest is an excellent freeware 2D platformer. You play as a bouncy ball, and much of the game's challenge comes from the surgical precision needed to land it on certain ledges without overshooting or bouncing off. The game takes place in a strange forest, and to move onward you need to journey into dungeons. As you explore and beat the game's dungeons, you collect powerups that let you change into different types of balls, which let you get to new areas in the game's overworld. The game's mix of puzzles, 2D exploration and really hard platform jumping makes it feel kind of like a bastard child of Zelda, Metroid and Mario. It gets pretty hard at times, but the mellow graphics and soundtrack will keep you from throwing your keyboard. Patience is often key, and if you find yourself getting frustrated, the best thing to do is often to sit back, relax and just listen to the game's music for a minute. Within a Deep Forest is a great platformer for those who don't mind a little challenge and prefer exploration and jumping puzzles over combat. Also check out Knytt, a much easier and even mellower platform game by the same creator, and Cave Story, an awesome Metroid/Castlevania clone that manages to outdo both series. Knytt and Within a Deep Forest are great games, and Cave Story is really a classic. Not to be missed for anyone who likes old-school platforming games in the slightest. And best of all, they're all free for anyone with an internet connection and a Windows PC. Knytt: Cave Story:

Outstanding freeware 2D platform game with simple game mechanics and brutal level design. Your ball collects powerups Metroid-style, and you need to use the right upgrades and downgrades to reach certain areas. You don't get to kill any enemies, but the levels themselves are your biggest threat. Getting from ledge to ledge takes surgical precision, and doing anything with the Glass Ball takes a lot of patience, but the game never gets too frustrating. Each level is VERY different from the last, and you never know what kind of insane gimmick the game will throw at you next.
