Crescent Beach, Linocut, 23.5" x 27", by John Covault. Etchings, lithographs etc. can be made to look like pen or pencil drawings, full of minute detail and fine lines - and that is their big difference with linocuts. Linocuts look like nothing other than linocuts and that is their unique beauty. Some fine line can be obtained with this method of printmaking, but generally speaking linocuts rely on chunkier areas of uniform colour and it is not possible to mimic overly subtle changes in shade. A good linocut artist will have not only a steady hand to cut away just what is necessary (correcting a bad cut is virtually impossible) but also an excellent capacity for analysing shape and suggesting tone. Most linocut artists stick to fairly simple shapes with little touches of shading. John Covault goes completely the other way and it is quite rare to find as complex a print as his with its huge range of tone and texture. It is the perfect example of the vast possibilities offered by this otherwise primitive but extraordinarily pleasant form of printmaking. Seeing it is also relatively cheap, involves no acid baths and a print can be taken even without a press - just by simple hand pressure - this is an artform all creative enthusiasts should give a try.
