My brother has done something similar, except my bro started with little money and did all the work himself (no contractors, helicopters, heavy machinery - except the 1948 International he recently bought - after all the hard work was done). I helped build his cabin from logs that he felled himself. I'm glad Les has the means to be able to pay other people to do the work. Technically the house is off the grid, but in building Les made quite a 'debt' against energy usage that it will take a very long time to amortize. My brother admits to still being on the grid, if you buy petrol -you're on the grid in some form or fashion.

I thought this was amazing and something that everyone could do if they put their mind to it and had some money to get them started. I definitely don't think it was cheap at first.

I d love to give this a try. Don't think the wife and kids would be game. But it is time we all try to disconnect somewhat.
