Cool story but ouch, crappy matrix stuff and dramatization kills anything that impresses. I am also pretty sure they also didn't actually "hack into it" but rather just activated the program already on the laptop that takes snapshots. And while MAC addresses are unique, they can changed with 2 lines in the command terminal.

A static IP wouldnt have worked but there are programs that can look for the mac address which is unique.

How did they find the ip?

Sucky matrix graphics. As for this being "technology" or anything new: NO. Fail.

pretty cool they got the computer back, but the stupid over-dramatic matrix scenes and reporter comments kind of ruined it... going to look for a written version...

Something they forgot to mention is that in order to access a (stolen) computer remotely, you need to know it's ip when it's connected to the internet. And this ip can even be different every time the computer connects. So you need to have a program installed that, when it is connected to the internet submits it's own ip address. Otherwise there is no way of knowing where it went, unless of course you start scanning the few million ip adresses available in your country.
