Well! Looks like good movies are coming out of copyright! This is the film that inspired all the others: Night of the living deads. I assure you that the horror mecanism used there are still working. Here's what Wikipedia has to say: Night of the Living Dead is a 1968 black-and-white independent horror film directed by George A. Romero. Early drafts of the script were titled Monster Flick, but it was known as Night of Anubis and Night of the Flesh Eaters during production. The film stars Duane Jones as Ben and Judith O'Dea as Barbra. The plot revolves around the mysterious reanimation of the dead and the efforts of Ben, Barbra and five others to survive the night while trapped in a rural Pennsylvania farmhouse. Classic 1968 horror movie.

A landmark in modern cinema that set the standard for several generations of shuffling zombiedom. Though the fresh (so to speak) ground it broke at the giddy end of the 60s has been endlessly retrodden, it has dated better than many of its imitators. [downloadable here]

I've got this one on a VHS cassette (the original english version taped from ARTE TV), but my computer has no VHS slot. (And who has standalone VHS players or even TVs these days?) Now I could watch it again (if I had the time).
