Today is an ortodox Easter, so I decided to put some photos of the monastery Kalenic, where I went today. It is situated in the part of Serbia called Levac, near the town Rekovac. Kalenic Monastery was built at the beginning of XV century, during the Despot Stefan Lazarevic's reign. It is seated at the wide area of The Kalenic river gorge grown with thick forest. It was founded by Bogdan, who was a high dignitary at Stefan Lazarevic's court. Kalenic was ruined, looted and burned down by the Turks, but it was several times restored. The experts restored the monastery in 1928/29. The monastery is considered to be a masterpiece of Morava School and it is one of the most beautiful medieval monasteries. It was protected as a cultural monument in the year of 1948, because of its architectonic, artistic and cultural-historic features. After the Cultural Goods Categorization was introduced in 1979, the monastery was given the status of a cultural monument of great significance, by The Assembly of The Republic of Serbia. The Church of Holy Mother's Initiation is the most luxurious building, which belongs to Morava School. The church's facade is covered with bricks and stones of various colors and decorated with numerous ornaments cut into Belovode's sandstone. Thanks to its lively, colorful and refined fresco paintings, Kalenic Monastery belongs to the group of the most beautiful monuments of Morava Architecture and Arts of the early XV century. The facade with its colorful and plastic decorative sandstone is quite impressive, as well as the dominant central dome. The frescoes are exceptionally valuable and they take a special place in Serbian medieval painting. The most famous frescoes are "Cane Wedding" and "Holy Warriors".
