Very unusual words

Where are the words 'nefandous' and 'merkin'? I once won a Websters International Dictionary by knowing the word 'nefandous'. These two words are the hallmark mark of a good dictionary. I guess these two words will have to remain nefandous for now.

This list has problems. I especially like the fact that it has "yclept" on there as though it's a modern English word and not from, you know, circa 950 AD. @sanmiko: auto-tonsorialist may not be in the dictionary but I'd be willing to bet that tonsorialist is. (It is in the OED). Still, kind of a ho-hum list, especially since it assumes that people just "create" words out of nowehre and that this creation must follow some unnamed but presumably sensible rules that weren't defined here.

I love the insanity of some of these words, I would praise this page with further blandiloquent sphallolalia but in my cachinnation I can't think of what to say. No charientism, honest.

A by no means exhaustive list of rare, obscure, strange and sometimes funny words and their meanings that only seem to crop up in crosswords and dictionaries. Words that are used so seldom, you wonder who invented them and why.

Some great words here. I'm mulling over the idea of writing a short story for the annual worst writing contest. The story will be composed entirely of prepositions, pronouns, articles and words from this list.
