Avoid perl for anything other than quick text transformation. Maybe Perl6 will be interesting, but I fear there will always be cleaner alternatives.

Recently I discovered that Perl 5 and earlier had automatic list flattening and, more, Perl programmers thought this was either not a problem or actually a good thing. Perl has now been redesignated on my mental landscape and is no longer labelled as "Programming language" but instead with "Malevolent Brain Eating Virus".
