So how do we decide what is moral? Where do you draw the line? In certain societies, it was perfectly acceptable for an older man to have sex with a young boy. Without a moral guide, everything is okay.

Like bygracenotmerit said, most of these "varieties" were not ordained by God, but rather just a historical fact. Contrary to what some believe, the Bible is a history book as well as a moral anchor, and people have done bad things. Laws are generally a response to human evil. Concerning the law regarding the rapist, let's consider what this would result in. The man would become married, and any further assaults on other women would be adultery, which carries the punishment of execution. With current laws in the US, it seems serial rapists get off with a few years in prison. Of course, with OT law, the first women might end up with a pretty terrible life. On the other hand, if the perpetrator were given the death sentence right then, we'd have anti capital punishment people all over that verse. The page is correct in pointing out that many people do not really understand the purpose of marriage. I would also like to know how the author would define it. Is it about romantic attraction between two people? That is a relatively recent cultural trend. Is it about inheritance? There are surely other ways to ensure one's property passes on to a desired individual after death. To get an answer, perhaps it can be suggested that one look to the foundational principles laid out by God in the Bible. In the beginning, God created a man and his wife. Two thousand years ago, as bygracenotmerit pointed out, Christ used marriage as the image to explain to us the relationship between Him and the Church.
