TheReporter rated 13 months ago- A single act of violent crime is not news. Ever. Period. by Madeline Zane, Unknown News April 22, 2007 A single act of violent crime is not news. Ever. Period. I can see giving the Virginia Tech story about 60 seconds, because it was the deadliest something-something in American history. And I'll give you another two minutes to mention that our nations' policies on gun control and mental health lead to a more dysfunctional and violent society. Anything more than that is exploitation, pure and simple. How many people died on Monday, April 16 because our government won't treat health care as a basic human right? How many people died in preventable workplace accidents? Or from unsafe consumer products? Or from cancer caused by industrial pollution? I don't have those numbers, but in every single case, it's damn sure more than thirty. Ten times that many people were killed on the Saturday just two days before the VT massacre, as a result of America's unnecessary, lie-based war in Iraq. All these deaths are real news stories, because they are caused by fixable problems in American policy and politics. But these stories don't come with the same violence, pathos, and general sexiness of a crazed lone gunman on a rampage. Yes, we are shocked and saddened by this story. We are shocked and saddened that even some of our favorite, most progressive news sources took precious hours away from actual news reporting last week, to wallow in this sensationalist muck. © by the author

clcallies rated 15 months ago- How many people died of boredom reading this article?

Koosalagoopagoop rated 15 months ago- The so called "important" issues are usually talked about usually relating to the powerful figures in society so the rich people of giant companies, people in hollywood, gov' officials, etc. Yes there will always be death and destruction but to ignore it and make it "bland" to group it into these black and white categories I disagree. For sheer amusement I liked the site but there is alot to know about the horrific event at Vrigina Tech. Collage. I send my prayers to the victims and those directly involved in it. Now depending on who you are then you choose what is and what is not important. There are people right now talking about the recent "Anna Nichole Smith" death. Stories like "Was she murdered?" come up. Once more it IS important to know what is going on in the world around you, if you let it slip by it might be to late. Please pay attention to some news because it could be helpful to you, even those little stories in the corner of the screen.

- Things that happen are definitely not news.

Murdocc rated 15 months ago- I'm surprised so many people agree.

arch4ngel rated 15 months ago- Well... here in Canada, my friend and me, we find it stupid to give that much credit to someone like him. Especially he clearly said that those of Colombine were like hero to him. Could you sue the media? :P

itpadmin rated 15 months ago- QFT.

LOKDINTYME rated 15 months ago- I agree. And, once again, it's the level (or lack thereof) of many people's education which enslaves them to sensationalism produced by the media. Mediocrity mixed with web-based self proclaimed 'fame' are now considered mainstream and normal everyday exercises. With a deep sense of injustice, I ask the question, "who cares if there are millions of homeless persons in the US who don't have a safe place to sleep, much less reasonably qualified physical, mental and emotional health care... much less that 20,000+ persons will cease to exist on this planet today due to malnutrition most likely caused by greed and war"?
