Rumsfeld Charged with War Crimes in German Court
"Human rights lawyers were joined by two winners of the Nobel Peace prize in filing charges in Germany Tuesday, accusing outgoing U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld of committing war crimes in Iraq and the U.S.-controlled Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba.
It is the second time human rights lawyers have filed charges against Rumsfeld. Last year, German courts dismissed a similar complaint against the Secretary of Defense on the eve of his visit to the European nation.
Michael Ratner, president of the New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights, says new conditions caused his organization to refile the suit. He points to the recently passed Military Commissions Act, which exempts from prosecution for torture or war crimes any U.S. government official for activities beginning September 11, 2001.
" The recently passed Military Commissions Act, which purports to amnesty the alleged war crimes of U.S. officials, is only the most recent illustration of American unwillingness to prosecute Americans ," Ratner said in a statement. " These crimes are not the work of 'a few bad apples'; they were planned and executed at the highest levels of the U.S. government. "
The complaint is being filed on behalf of 11 Iraqi citizens who the Center for Constitutional Rights documents were severely beaten, deprived of sleep and food, sexually abused, stripped naked and hooded, and exposed to extreme temperatures at Abu Ghraib prison.
Among the witnesses willing to testify against Rumsfeld is Janis Karpinski, a former Army general who ran Abu Ghraib prison until photos of severe torture surfaced in the media in April 2004..."

Ml41a rated 18 months ago- I suggest Europe look at their own debris of a culture regularly pumping out war criminals. File charges against their own leaders and political figures instead of butting into our business.

Diocletian9 rated 18 months ago- Nuremberg principles should apply to all war criminals. Those tried and found guilty should be hung by the neck until dead.

Mayamoi rated 18 months ago- If the U.S. wasn't run by criminals and hadn't lost all respectability and wasn't now thought of as immoral and unjust it might have been the champion of decency and the one bringing charges against war criminals. As it is America is one to lookout for. Speaking of criminals where's Osama? Do you think he'll be caught during bush's presidency? How about during bush's life time? I should have said bush's failed presidency. What about a real president next time? The U.S. is run by criminals that should all be in jail, they need to clean house and hold a special election. What does it say about the American people when their leaders are what these are? "Human rights lawyers were joined by two winners of the Nobel Peace prize in filing charges in Germany Tuesday, accusing outgoing U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld of committing war crimes in Iraq and the U.S.-controlled Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba." These are Nobel Peace prize winners.
