OK, normally I don't use my StumbleUpon blog for venting about political issues that I stumble across. I thumbs up well worded opposing arguments, especially if I think anyone who reads subscribes to my stumbles would like it. I try very hard to remain open minded to other people's ideas . . . However, if a page is loaded with logical fallacy or such, even if it agrees with a belief I have, it still gets the thumbs down--and usually thats all it gets and I'm on my way. But for this page, being that I've been working with the school systems in the US for quite a number of years, I feel I can add a few things as to why I hit thumbs down. For one thing, just throwing money at the public school systems doesn't work; money doesn't increase "success," check out DC schools as one of the many examples, _by far_ one of the most expense per-student, and almost the least "successful" results in the nation. Also, Federal funding for schools means even more federal regulation of schools, and the federal regulation we already have is already seriously bad news, just ask any teacher. Just in case you are wondering where the money comes from, schools are usually supported by state or local funding.

Go see what true majority has to say about solving problems like: education, health care and the like... It's not a liberal vs conservative thing, it's an AMERICAN thing...

I point classmates to this movie when they start complaining about how universal health care is too expensive for America. Just a fraction of the defense budget can feed, clothe, educate, and provide health care for so, so many people. Wake up.

Two minutes a month is the minimum they're asking for. Who doesn't have two minutes a month to invest in the future?

This seems like a really reasonable argument. I like it. One person who I always consult when it comes to military issues, though, is my best friend JadedTales, who is a Navy wife and has been really involved and stays very informed on a variety of political topics, especially ones that affect the military. I learned from her that our troops are often underpaid, less well-equipped than they should be, and live in what many would consider substandard housing. I also learned that the Navy is continuing to use 30-year-old jets such as the Prowlers that her husband works on, which means that maybe a plane might cost a lot up front but they milk every last little bit of use out of their equipment. With those things in mind, if we're spending 400 billion dollars on our military, where the heck is all that money going? Black ops? Salaries of top brass? I'd like to see somebody take those 40 cookies and break them down into various categories of spending so I could understand better. Even with being the world's policeman to some extent, and being a major target for terrorism... I don't see why we need such a massive military budget. Terrorism is difficult to protect against because it's unlikely to happen in the same way twice... but throwing more money at the problem isn't the solution. In the long run, violence never solves problems. Education is usually what does the trick... until people learn to value all human life, they're going to keep fighting and killing others.
