obviously, this ability has been in use for awhile and not by shopkeeps... department stores did not think up phone tracking all by their lonesomes. maybe the tinfoil hat is finding a legit use. take the tire-pressure monitors (search rfid)out of your car, too, while you're ditching your cellphone. THEN there's this: www.talkleft.com/story/2008/5/24/131113 /234and the U.S. has to use creepo-voyeuristic-type x-rays of our children and grandmothers at airports to "find" terrorists "But because the image is anatomically explicit, millimeter-wave screening is controversial. Denver(DIA),Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Los Angeles International, JFK International in New York, Baltimore-Washington International and Albuquerque International."

We know your dirty little secret! Shall we tell your wife, employer or the tax office?

Isn't this what Edison Carter predicted on Network 23? Anyone remember what a "blank" was? Someone not registered with the system. Anyway, first it was RFID tags, now they're jacking with my cell phones.

From the page: "Customers in shopping centres are having their every move tracked by a new type of surveillance that listens in on the whisperings of their mobile phones. The technology can tell when people enter a shopping centre, what stores they visit, how long they remain there, and what route they take as they walked around. The device cannot access personal details about a personâ€s identity or contacts, but privacy campaigners expressed concern about potential intrusion should the data fall into the wrong hands. The surveillance mechanism works by monitoring the signals produced by mobile handsets and then locating the phone by triangulation "measuring the phone's distance from three receivers."
