Interesting site. I do have some remarks. "You have to blow your own horn" Typical American. It makes me laugh right after putting me off. In most of the world what counts are facts and not a big mouth about how great you are. It's perceived as arrogance. Shut up and prove it.... more

living in japan as an american, i find it magnifies such cultural differences. i came here trying to experience a more harmonious group culture. i am often amazed to what lengths japanese people will go in the name of group dynamics. while i think my viewpoint has changed considerably, i still do find my own ingrained individualism ruffling feathers from time to time. to think i once thought of myself a more selfless individual compared to the average american, it only took a few months living here to realize i am not so different after all. this article was great in pointing out a lot of these cultrual differences we as americans often take for granted, and i think more than anything the message is to think before you stink. the best advice when traveling or dealing with other cultures is to keep it low key, observe what other people are doing and do your best to be gracious at all times, not just when it is convenient to do so.

What do I think about when I think of America? Consumerism, Maccas and rabid followings of lame fads and trends

I definitely saw that many of the French felt this way when I went to Paris. Unfortunately, a lot of those stereotypical American qualities are also the ones that allow American women to be more confident and free than any other women in the world. I can't really stomach pretending to have none of those qualities. (Oh, and don't be blonde in France either - NO ONE is blonde except American tourists.)
