The visitor to Katsura circumnavigates the garden in a clockwise direction, keeping the pond on one's right. One of the first views of the garden is looking to the south toward the largest of Katsura's five tea houses (its name is Shokin-tei, or Pine Lute Pavilion). In the foreground of this view is a "rocky shore" of carefully chosen pebbles, similar to the famous stone beach of the garden of Sento Gosho. Just visible to the right is a thin peninsula consisting of two islands linked to each other and to the shore by stone slab bridges. This is the designer's evocation of the long sand spit known as Amanohashidate, one of the three most famous of Japan's scenic spots.
