"Now the State Department in Washington has joined forces with US industry to plan an image makeover by issuing guides on how to behave for Americans travelling overseas....The guide advises Americans to not just talk but to listen; to discuss and argue but not to be didactic, and not to foist a US world view on others." I hope George Bush gets a copy of this.

From the page: "The reputation of the ugly American abroad is not just some cruel stereotype. Rather, says the United States Government, it is worryingly accurate." Oh BOO! Thanks to Auntie Em for this Stumble but I had to thumb down the site due to content. Oh I dislike more personality traits of people than not but I'm not going to culturalize them. Americans travel probably as much as the Japanese and as a result...more locals will encounter the loud and gawdy American as opposed to the loud and gawdy African or South American or Australian... The only quiet culture that I could stereotype would be the Asians but the difference is remarkable! To be so fine-lined as to narrow it to Americans is wild. I am sure I misinterpreted the article because it seemed as if it had been the Americans who needed to teach etiquette to its own citizens for business. So don't listen to me...I've been having one of these days.
