"A Sonnet for Skedaddle"
July the Fourth, the birth of freedom comes,
For Jefferson and Adams, both the rent
And sad beginning to results that sent
The newly formed America in 1861
To civil war, a purging of the angered air,
The dark horizon's potent glare
At Constitution's justice marred,
At what had blighted early dawn's repair
Of freedom's banner; came impatience, spent
In blood, this tragic and most inevitable war
To end the self-inflicted wounds in hearts within the core
Of what became the eagle's rock: these states were bent
Toward forming more in perfect union's height:
Skedaddle finds the time, records the light.
What a dedication is here on the part of Skedaddle to the even report of America's most costly war, the Civil War, a war which both divided and united all, and bonded these several states in such a union as has never been witnessed in the history of mankind! If there is an interest in history and a continued interest in the insult and remedy of history, then Skedaddle's site provides a fair hearing. Which is more formidable? the task, itself or Skedaddle's labors in intellectual honesty and care in presenting what is both scholarship and an abiding sense of true concentration on what was both the wrong and the right of both sides of the earth's first experiment in the forming of a nation based on an idea! I cannot compliment this site enough. Bravo!
