"The best way to protect your garden is to fence it in. The same applies to your computer. Get computer security news and information, help, tips and more at the Security Garden"... a good site, I read it frequently. Regular updates and some very good links. It's not too heavy with the technical stuff but it gives some good advice and keeps you informed about keeping secure on the net as well as providing links to other useful security sites. The above is from three months ago when I first posted the Security Garden but I'm bumping it up again because it saved me from a lot of needless hassle this week. I went to the site to read about the Microsoft updates for this week, as I always do, before I downloaded them... and thank goodness I did because I came across this post on the site.... ... having read it, and being a Zone Alarm user, I decided against installing KB951748 so as not to risk having my internet connection blocked. Unfortunately many people had let the Microsoft updates install themselves automatically and as a consequence they couldn't connect to the internet. So I have to thank Security Garden for that, it pays to know what you're letting onto your machine beforehand.. even if it's from Microsoft. I also should thank the volunteers who give out some great advice on the Zone Alarm User Forum, the forum kept everyone affected informed of what was going on and did their best to resolve the problem and provide a workaround..., and to the people at Zone Alarm for providing patches to download in such a short time. All updated and back to normal now, but it goes to show that it's best to read up on things properly before you download anything and let it loose on your system.
