I broke my back while in the Marine Corps (fractured a vertebrae - no spinal cord damage other than disk compression, thankfully), and because I was too young and ignorant, (and with a brand new baby to boot) I could not/did not fight the process. Heck, I knew I was messed up, but I did not even know how screwed up the situation really was until my condition became chronically debilitating... I was given an honorable/medical discharge and a partial paycheck of $72 bucks and told that I was too hurt to be a Marine but not too hurt to work. Even though this was over 20 years ago - I remember the amount of $72 because I was so shocked at how ridiculous it all was. This story is basically what happened to me...
