When I am very very lucky, I get to talk to school kids about the work we do on particle accelerators. Usually it stays pretty basic but it's wonderful fun for me (and that's all that really counts, no?) But here's an article that explains "atom smashing" quite clearly; we are working now with a particle accelerator in Europe and that kind of technology is a bit much for the generally interested adult, but if you want more, just Google it and it's all there, no secrets. The picture here is courtesy of the Brookhaven National Labs.   There is incredible beauty in science. What you see here is a photo of two gold beams in the "Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider" but you can just say, "Awesome, dude" like a kid today did. That makes me happier anyway!
