The following is a response to Klassy's call to Stumblers for an Interview on the Nature of Art 1. What is art? Visual & audiological language that engages the audience or tries to represent a multidimensional idea by evoking emotions in an original/personalised way. Usually accepted to be something conceptual, and aesthetically pleasing. I think this goes a bit like what is "good" or "bad", societies and indivuals make this judgement based on relativity. 2. Do you consider yourself an artist of a sort? Yes. An amateur one at painting, drawing, animation, video editing, piano and occasional wordsmithery. 3. What is an "artist"? Those who have mastered how to communicate with/ create visual/ musical concepts that appeal or in some way move an audience. Being an attention whore seems to help. The more exposure you get the more you can get people get to agree that you are an artist - whether you have "aesthetical talent" or not, the more the tag seems to stick. (think Britney spears or trained painting elephants) 4. Does art serve a purpose, or is it just a useful means of escapism? It's a communication tool as well as an escape method - but as a means of escapism means it does serve a purpose, however "shallow" the purpose may seem. Usually as a means of escapism it's seen as a "low" art. 5. Has art become just a new, inventive form of product placement due to rampant capitalism? This is "specialized art"/commercial art. It's all become about using design to grab enough attention to sell your product or idea. 6. Can things like advertisements or commercials, et al, be considered "artistic"? Definitely, look at the Sony Bravia commercial or Absolut print ad campaigns. 7. What do you make of Banksy? A grafitti artist that seems to be everywhere and has a following that seems to respect or atleast respond to his art - making it more acceptable for a medium that was seen rather whimsical, immature, egoistic or hostile to a form that can be used to broadcast a statement or question to the public with seriousness or humour - it's up to the viewer how they choose to react. 8. What do you make of graffiti art? We've been doing it since cave man ages. Marking territory with visual stories just to say "I woz 'ere". 8.1 Is it improving our banal living conditions, and thus enhancing our lives, or taking away from the "inherent beauty of cities"? If it's forced on your eyes whether you find it appealing or not, it does a disservice. Art should allow some kind of respect for the viewer. 9. The Supreme Court defines pornography as a form of media: "(a) whether the 'average person, applying contemporary community standards' would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest, (b) whether the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by the applicable state law, and (c) whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value." That aside, can art be pornographic, and vice versa? If there's a message that conveys something other than sex, some kind of sensuality, question, or emotion from the viewer it could be artistic. Does it evoke something other than lust? Pornography is always one dimensional. There is no other story or message in porn except for "I like/want sex"
