` IN OUR PRISIONS, 140,000 MEN ARE RAPED EVERY YEAR. This is what 140,000 people looks like: from the page: "...every year, over 140,000 men are raped in the United States. No one talks about it because it happens inside of prisons. No one cares about it because it... more

Hey wow! This is EXACTLY the same as one that I stumbled a week ago! Picture and everything! And I'll say now what I said then: Where are the sources?

And is your figure of 90,000 women including the women raped in prison? Because yes, many if not most are, and if you aren't including that, than you're comparing apples to oranges. (And since I couldn't find your figure of 140000 men... so I don't know if you included coerced rape in there, but I know the 90,000 figure is just for forcible rape, not coerced.)

I don't think those figures are accurate, as I have met several women that have been raped, and the majority were not reported. Rape is an issue in prison, but the prison officers have a duty of care to prevent such things happening. However, some prison officers are rapists themselves and there is very little that the prisoners can do to prevent it. I do firmly believe that prison should only be for the most serious, violent offenders.

Commenter NiseeRocks below me has a really good point. But, I still think that we need to be more aware of this issue. It's not going to go away just because it's behind bars.

How is this cruel and unusual punishment? This is not systematic, government-sponsored rape of criminals in prison. These are individual acts committed by criminal individuals (guards included). So sorry if this isn't number one on my concern list, but to me it's just more criminal behavior behind bars. Also, what do you want me to do about it?

Now also consider how many of those people are innocent: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2009/07/21/heritage-house-law/

Shocking facts. Read "The Innocent Man" by John Grisham for a real story of a miscarriage of justice.
