I have loved this lady, as a dear friend, for well over two years now - I even sent her family a six-pack of marmite from England when I was back in '05/'06 (they didn't like it!!!) - and her pages are as delightful now as they were then. Go visit with the lady from 65 degrees North, and tell her I sent you. .

This is a blog of a sober observer, who seems to have the right attitude on various things. Things which in my opinion matter! What else should I expect from her? Humour? It's there too! A big thumb up, and thank you for being here :) Paraphrasing Railmeat words: Warning is already under way!

Helga's rather smoky pages are often moody and quite distinctive. I love her astute and intelligent observations, her politics and her taste in music, plus she is a great SU friend.

From the page on Microstories: It was October and once again trees wondered why crowds and cars came to watch them grow old and die. A superb blog. My kind of Visuals

Dr. Kris approved. Put down your spoon, shut your piehole, and go check out Helga's blog. Right now.

Railmeat is a newish stumbler and one of my favourites, both on her pages and as a friend and kindred spirit. What draws me to review her now is this item about portraits of a photographer. And in contrast to the vapid Half-Naked Fridays that have been appearing on many stumblers' pages (mostly pin-ups of "hunks" advertising jeans or underwear), here we have some real substance. Yes, he is chunky rather than hunky, but I am not talking about the shape of the elderly man so much as the concept of the portraits. The figure is that of a man revered for what he has done BEHIND the camera -- a situation where the man who has long been in control allows a woman, and someone junior to him in every way, to control HIM for once. And of course here he have a real person, not some narcissist buffed for mass consumption. ~~~ For me "attractiveness" is not about the body -- the shell -- but about what resides IN it. My lovers have tended to be bony, spindly men, for whatever reason, but I wasn't looking for skinny men; I was just attracted to guys I saw as sharp, intelligent and witty. Muscly men are usually physical, and although they look good aesthetically, I don't usually feel they're "my type". As to rating appeal on the basis of a photo, I simply can't. And having been lured into romances via the phone in the past, I can also now say a voice would not propel me in any way either (I have learnt how manipulative and seductive that voice can be). No, I need to know how the guy thinks, what he values and what makes him laugh. Of course his looks matter, but no more than, say, his laugh, the way he eats, his hobbies or his desert island discs. ~~~ Note to members of the HNF club: Is having men pose the way women do supposed to be progress, or God forbid, female liberation? Or male liberation, for that matter? Sex objects are not sexy. Not to me. Famous men Well, I find Jeff Bridges sexy -- but it's in his personality (perceived). If he posed as a hunk though I'd think he was a galoot and a dunderhead -- if he wasn't mocking the game. And Patrick McGoohan is, and always has been sexy to me, and there it is in his penetrating gaze and silent intensity. I know HE wouldn't cheapen himself by posing for a billboard. Actually I think putting yourself up for public display as a "thing" is tacky.
