A new analysis suggests that a tax of $35 per metric ton on CO2 emissions would affect both consumer choices and power company investments. What would happen if policy makers in the U.S. suddenly approved a tax on CO2? Would electric utilities instantaneously switch to more efficient power plants with lower CO2 emissions? Would consumers immediately become more careful of their electricity use? New research published in ES&T (DOI: 10.1021/es071749d) concludes that the answer to these questions is a resounding "yes." The researchers also note that earlier work has found that the price needed to stimulate these changes will encourage power companies to invest in low-carbon technologies.
