"Psilocybin for the dying: a humane study on changing one's perception of pain". Article by Judith Lewis on a study by Charles Grob involving the compassionate use of psychedelics as spiritual preparation for death. 'In a controlled setting under the influence of psilocybin ... the loss of that self is no longer as threatening as it was before' - Rev. Mike Young, who took part in the Good Friday experiment. That psilocybin is so widely castigated and officially banned is an absurdity I can scarcely countenance (it was made illegal in my country last year on a flimsy and ignorant pretext). If I have a say in the matter I may take some when my own time comes :) Image: Dying by Alex Grey.

Fascinating stuff. Psilocybin directly affects the quality of conscious experience, dislocating it somehow from the perception of identity. It also chemically induces spiritual experiences. Interesting. Mr. Grob is also to be supported in his efforts to bring comfort to the dying.
