An analysis of what Twitter needs to do to become a viable business. The Twitter lover in me wants to see the service succeed long term, but the accountant in me has to agree with the author that the numbers just don't add up.

Draper gets down and dirty with the calculator to show why Twitter can't make it as a business. As a fervent twitterer, my only hope is that he's wrong because he hasn't looked at out-of-the-box possibilities.

Wondering what the future might hold for Twitter? This article speculates that Twitter might be in for a rough ride in terms of actually making money. Why? Well, venture capitalists funding it have to get their return on investment and the potential revenue models might not cut it, that's why. It's an interesting analysis of revenue models given the current estimated user base and what might happen under various scenarios. I've often thought about how Twitter can actually make money. I hope they can. I like the service and I think it's valuable to work into a social media marketing strategy. How valuable? Well, I think I'd be willing to pay more than the $5 a month suggested in this article. Maybe $10 per month? I never used to support free services, but I've begun to change my thinking. I even supported Stumbleupon. :) Overall this is a pretty good article and I think you can take the method of evaluating Twitter and use it to evaluate any site.

Looking at many variations on several possible business models, it's clear that Twitter just can't make enough money to justify the amount of venture capital they've taken. The sharks will sell them off.
