- Very nice IM client. I've been using this as my only IM client for years now, and while it's not perfect (not many reverse-engineered applications are), it's very well done and much less obtrusive than most of the official clients it replaces. I strongly recommend using the OTR (off-the-record) plugin for pidgin. It provides strong encryption, and beyond that, deniability.

Undeniably the best, most flexible, simplest text-only instant messaging program on the planet. I have twelve accounts defined in my Pidgin Portable installation and use it constantly throughout the day. In addition to the mainstream IM networks, easily installed plug-ins exist for Facebook Chat, Xfire, and more.
The only thing missing is voice and webcam support, which of course, hardcore IM'ers frown upon. :-)
ps. Regarding Mariavis' concern about IM BOTs (below), check out the Bot Sentry plugin.
