Geisha and Maiko girls of Japan (Kyoto) Geisha, or person of the arts, are traditional Japanese artist-entertainers. They were most popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, and are still in existence today, although the numbers are dwindling. Look at how the back of the neck is painted, it shows a part of the female anatomy, which is seen as erotic to the Japanese man. Their hairstyles take several hours to do, and they have to sleep on a special pillow to avoid the hair getting messed up... Entertaining and doing tea ceremonies at the teahouses. Maiko in training.

Beautiful photos from around the world. My favourites are of the Geisha of Kyoto. Having read Memoirs of a Geisha I love seeing photos of these exquisite women.
