An interesting fact about google searches, the kind that numerous amounts of people use thousands of times a day.

Seems like this would be impossible to verify. I don't buy it. And as cyberdelights pointed out... the more searches people do in an hour, the less power / search / hr.

Utterly useless fact that is dependent on so many factors that it's probably not even true.

give me a break. I'm sorry but this eco-friendly-environment-organic-"go green!" trend is really getting on my nerves. I've always cared about the environment and still do, but this is getting ridiculous. How about you stop wasting your time researching how much energy a simple Google search consumes, and start applying your research and time to a more serious and immediate problem - I mean really, shouldn't our attention be directed towards something like the AIDS epidemic, a cure for cancer, homelessness, animal/child/domestic abuse, poverty, the destruction of rain forests and other natural landscape...and I'm not talking about how much energy is used, or how much pollution is emitted by the truck that carries your non-organic produce.

a single Google search query (taking less than a second) consumes as much energy as an 11-watt light bulb does in one hour. This number is based on the total number of servers Google is running, the total energy consumption of those servers, and the total number of search queries processed. Rolf Kersten estimates that running a single Google query releases 6.8 grams of CO2 and consumes a bit less--2 to 8 watt-hours of energy. Cost of energy per search on google - what about energy costs per search - this does not factor irrelevant results and time wasted!

I wonder what would happen if every person in the world with internet submitted a Google query at exactly the same time.

E/S = 11 watts per Google search E = amount of energy/hr to run google servers S= number of searches/hr Thus, the more searches people do, the less energy it costs per search.

Can not believe that all of the recycle, reduce, reuse things that I do are cancelled out when I do a Google search. A tip for Google - ALTERNATIVE ENERGY.

This is hardly the end of the world.. I mean an 11 watt lightbulb is nothing.
