I use this at work for our VPN. Imagine 16 reprogrammed routers running tinc and IPv6: woot!

From the page: "Instead of trying to create a single, static firmware, OpenWrt provides a fully writable filesystem with package management. This frees you from the application selection and configuration provided by the vendor and allows you to customize the device through the use of packages to suit any application. For developer, OpenWrt is the framework to build an application without having to build a complete firmware around it; for users this means the ability for full customization, to use the device in ways never envisioned."

OpenWRT is (among other things) a replacement firmware for your Linksys (or similar) wireless routers. I have a WRT-54GS at home and I've used the stock firmware, Sveasoft and now this. OpenWRT is miles ahead, esp. when combined with X-Wrt!

much like any un*x it can be complex and intimidating to all but experienced un*x users. I LOVE it!!! Being able to turn that unassuming little blue and black box into a wireless router / linux pc is amazing. I have experimented with it as a wireless layer2 switch, a powerful vpn client, a versatile small office firewall/router. But if you just want a linksys box with a few more features then stick with HyperWRT Thibor.

The Linksys WRT54G is one of the few cheap, popular routers taht published the source code to their firmware. As a result, there are a ton of really leet hacks for it. This is the starting point -- the distribution.

OpenWrt is a Linux distribution for wireless routers. Instead of trying to cram every possible feature into one firmware, OpenWrt provides only a minimal firmware with support for add-on packages.
