I love reading the comments by the ones who gave a thumbs down here. There are a lot of comparisons but ultimately the difference between Iowa and New Orleans is the fact that people are different. Remember that Iowa must be somewhat a liberal place to live as they have gay marriage there so it can't be that NO was more liberal. No, it has to do with people living in Iowa that don't wait for others to help. They roll up their sleeves and go to work. In NO the victim mentality waited for someone to blame and to bail them out. For years we paid for them to live somewhere and they still complained with the government wanted them to take care of themselves. And then the government sold them the trailers for a pittance. The difference is can do verses don't do.

American servicemen noted that the Germans were very much like the Americans in that they simply rebuilt Germany after Hitler anihilated it. According the returning servicemen, the French did not do so well. The two cultures are different--as are the cultures in New Orleans and Iowa. I would not go to Iowa if I wanted to learn about a great musical culture and I wouldn't go to New Orleans to learn about engineering. The sooner we realize that cultures are different, the sooner we will be able to put aside the idea that one culture is greater than another simply because they can rebuild a city.

Ummm... Comparing Katrina to a short-lived flood is a little bit crazy. Well, a lot bit crazy. You're crazy. Let's see some stats instead of pictures and comments glorifying the mighty Iowians; maybe then we'll see why Katrina was a bigger deal than just some flood.
