Tekapo, a town of 830 on New Zealand's South Island, has adopted lighting policies that mean the stars are clearly visible. The residents hope to see their town gain UNESCO's approval as the first "starlight reserve" "It's estimated that about one fifth of the world's population and more than two-thirds in the U.S. cannot see the Milky Way from their homes."

I live in the country, in norcal, and I get to see the nightsky unless it's cloudy..... I was born in the bay area.... lived there till I was 17..... still love it there, but I would miss the starry skies
