Remember the segment of Creepshow called "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrell?" Stephen King was right! Or someone's having fun. Ooh. Maybe it's a conspiracy! From the page: "Mystery illness strikes after meteorite hits Peruvian village Mon Sep 17, 11:23 PM ET LIMA (AFP) - Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday. Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia. Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP. Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said. Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache. "Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said."

Getting tired of seeing this everywhere.

These are the kinds of stories that get a quiet retraction several days later after someone finally decides to check the sources.

Update:

Wow! The fact that this is documented now and not just an internet rumor makes this all the creepier (anybody else remember The Andromeda Strain)?

OK, I know I joked about alien life, when this story first broke, but this is getting out there. I ask this question, do you think people would have gotten sick if it had landed in a developed country? I do not think so. I think the thing hit and blew something buried toxins into the air, and maybe even down into the ground water. What the people are getting is something that was already there, just exposed by the extreme heat and shock of this.

"Nanu Nanu. Mork calling Orson. Come in Orson..."
For the record this is the farthest a rotten egg has been thrown in the galaxy.
If this meteorite was just a bit bigger, say the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, "We" all could be smelling like rotten eggs by now.
So many wars, so few meteors. Which comes first? The idiots or the egg?
