Great article. I've never believed the death penalty should apply now for people who leave Islam. It may have been relevant during the prophets time (for reasons of spy's and treason etc). But for people to still think its relevant today?!
If people are leaving Islam, then we should...

From the page: "The hadiths which relate to apostasy are linguistically ambiguous and open to interpretation. Distinguished scholars told me that the hadiths actually speak about a death penalty for treason, not apostasy. And even then, they stressed the punishment is discretionary."
All about the problems faced by Muslims when they choose to convert to another faith. Worth a read.
throthrem rated 6 months ago- The world of organized religion has gone crazy. I could switch "Islam" with "Christianity" and "Koran" with "Bible" and get the same result. I like how meDuckie put it, "Religion is not the bane of human civilization. People are."

- "He believes the death penalty punishment is no longer applicable and should be suspended under certain circumstances." How very fucking enlightened.

- From the page: "I was staggered to learn that the Quran does not say anything about punishing apostates and that its proponents use two hadiths instead to support their view. Hadiths are the recorded traditions and sayings of the Prophet which, in addition to the Quran, provide an additional source of Islamic law.

If people are leaving Islam, then we should look to ourselves and look at why they are leaving to begin with.
Still this article gives me hope.

CharlesHB rated 6 months ago- attitudes are softening... it's remarkable in the C21st that an article needs to be written about a major world religion's whose followers and teachers advocate death for someone who adopts another faith, or no faith at all - this medieval thinking at its worst.
LyleDAL rated 6 months ago- From the page: "There's a widespread belief that the penalty for leaving Islam is death - hence, perhaps, the killing of a British teacher last week. But Shiraz Maher believes attitudes may be softening." -- Once again, religion proves it has nothing to do with peace or understanding. Destroying families and individuals, religion is the bane of human civilization.
