The internet was supposed to be the way we could avoid the problems of energy shortages, traffic gridlock and overcrowdedness in general. With everybody working and communicating from home you could live anywhere and wouldn't have to be out on the roads clogging everything up. Oops, now it looks like we will need to find something else. [Thanks, nedreck]

While the scenario is plausible, the fact that the report is funded by the IIA who is interested in increasing bandwidth to justify universal access dimishes the validity of the report. (disclaimer: I'm on IIA's side) From the page: "The report is part-funded by the Internet Innovation Alliance (IIA) which campaigns for universal broadband in the US." The report also assumes that the ISPs will invest money into the infrastructure. They won't until they must, much to the public & Google's chagrin. Instead, they will continue doing traffic shaping and restrict/slow down certain services like they currently do with P2P. It's only a matter of time until they roll it out to videos. Hence, Google's alarm. Furthermore if the cable companies get their chance, we'll have tiered services. Would you like just CNN & Google or do you want to add YouTube to your choice of web sites, sir? VPN, that makes you a business user. Oh, BitTorrent to download your free Linux OS is extra. DOWN WITH THE TELCOS!

From the page: "Consumer demand for bandwidth could see the internet running out of capacity as early as 2010, a new study warns." But I really needs my Internet bits.
