Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) - which primarily consists of meditation [combined with cognitive behavioral therapy]- teaches a way of looking at problems, observing them clearly but not necessarily trying to fix them or solve them. It suggests to people that they begin to see all their thoughts as just thoughts, whether they are positive, negative or neutral. Meditation is a new area of research, but indications are intriguing and suggest that meditation may have a measurable impact on the brain. "[Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)] teaches a way of looking at problems, observing them clearly but not necessarily trying to fix them or solve them. It suggests to people that they begin to see all their thoughts as just thoughts, whether they are positive, negative or neutral." "It involves dealing with expectations, with constantly judging ourselves - feeling we're not good enough," researcher Dr. Richard Davidson said. "And, that is something which is so widespread in our communities. "All of these things are just thoughts. And, they will come up in meditation and learning to recognize what they are as thoughts, and let them go, can be enormously empowering for anybody." This is one of the best general articles about scientific investigations into the benefits of meditation and how it changes the brain. Recommend this article to anyone you know who is considering meditation, or could benefit from giving it a try. It demonstrates that it's nothing mystical, but rather, a practical and proven method for improving one's life.

Scientists are learning ways to measure and identify changes in the brain associated with meditation. This article also has an interesting reference to a popular program in the UK Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy.
