: BURMESE MONKS TO BE SENT AWAY Thousands of monks detained in Burma's main city of Rangoon will be sent to prisons in the far north of the country, sources have told the BBC.About 4,000 monks have been rounded up in the past week as the military government has tried to stamp out pro-democracy protests. The monks have been disrobed and shackled, the sources told BBC radio's Burmese service. There are reports that the monks are refusing to eat.Last week several monasteries were raided, and there were reports of monks being beaten and killed. With many monks behind bars, the demonstrations have now died down. :

Many people want to see an end to this brutal regime, but aside from signing a petition on Avvaz.org and writing emails to MPs to put more 'pressure' on China & India, there's not a lot we can do. The junta knows that the attention span of the world is severely limited and will play on that as they have always done. OZ foreign minister Alexander Downer described progress in Burma as watching glue flow up a hill. Surely the time has come to put an end to this nonsense? Postpone Beijing2008 if need be.
