- This organization has been featured, at least indirectly, in two of my weblog posts - here and here. I am intrigued by the concept of complexity or more to the point, our ability to understand the concept of complexity.

Their conferences bring in a lot of big name speakers in diverse fields, but none of them really talk about complex systems themselves. The filed of complex systems has been around for a while now and has yet to define either complexity (relative to systems not in the informational sense) or emergence. And NESCI isn't helping any.

NECSI research develops basic concepts and formal approaches as well as their applications to real world problems. To date, the contributions of NECSI researchers include studies of networks, agent-based modeling, multiscale analysis and complexity, chaos and predictability, evolution, ecology, biodivesity, altruism, systems biology, cellular response, health care, systems engineering, negotiation, military conflict, ethnic violence, and international development.
