The Google Desktop does NOT upload your desktop index to Google.com! It uses the localhost to open up a webpage on your computer, NOT googles! The search occurs using YOUR COMPUTER!

From the page: "Google Desktop Search security risk - University Announcements Posted March 17, 2006 9:55 AM by Claire Wagner Miami's information security office has learned of a high security risk for users of the Google Desktop application and its search feature. This desktop utility provides searching and indexing of your desktop contents. To accomplish that search, the contents of your desktop are uploaded to a Google server where the search occurs. Because the information travels to servers outside of the Miami network, this represents a risk to your information. If you have any Miami student, financial or other confidential information, using the Google Desktop Search could result in disclosure of information in violation of privacy laws. It is strongly advised that this product not be installed on university computers. If you have already installed this product, you are advised to remove it as soon as possible. If you have problems, please consult the Miami knowledge base item #98572. The Google Desktop Search utility is a separate downloadable application. This message is not directed to users of the search engine Google.com or the Google Search Bar."
